Democracy Gone Astray

Democracy, being a human construct, needs to be thought of as directionality rather than an object. As such, to understand it requires not so much a description of existing structures and/or other related phenomena but a declaration of intentionality.
This blog aims at creating labeled lists of published infringements of such intentionality, of points in time where democracy strays from its intended directionality. In addition to outright infringements, this blog also collects important contemporary information and/or discussions that impact our socio-political landscape.

Annual anti-abortion march draws thousands to Ottawa

OTTAWA – More than 10,000 people joined the 16th annual anti-abortion March for Life on Parliament Hill Thursday, with several Conservative MPs adding their support to the throng.  A small group of pro-choice advocates staged counter-demonstrations.

“We stand up for the rights of women and girls, we stand up for the rights of life,” B.C. MP Mark Warawa said in a brief speech about gendercide, the killing of females including aborting a fetus based on its sex. A man in the crowd shouted “We love you, Mark” as the Tory backbencher spoke.

Warawa also spoke in the House of Commons, where he called on Parliament to “end discrimination against women and girls occurring through global gendercide.”

Here’s a look at some of the people who showed up for the annual rally.

-

Who: Joanne Dieleman, Grimsby, Ont.

History: Retired. Worked in a crisis pregnancy centre in Toronto, and says she knows the impact abortion can have. Has attended the annual rally about a dozen times.

Quote: “I’m here to protest the killing of unborn children. I’ve been coming for many, years,” she said, “I find it abhorrent that they’re killing children in the womb.”

-

Who: Andrew Fehr, 18, Chatham, Ont.

History: High school student. Took an eight-hour bus ride with other students to come to the rally. Passionate about the issue and  concerned about “lost fatherhood” as a result of abortion.

Quote: “I really think this is an important message we need to send. It’s a genocide, it’s terrible. And to think that you can get away with it legally, it makes me sick, quite honestly.”

-

Who: Teresa Ferrazzi, Fergus, Ont.

History: First time at the march. Came by bus with people from a neighbouring parish. Though her back gave her trouble on the ride, “it’s worth it.”

Quote: “I can put myself in a little child’s being in a womb, and think, ‘let me live, let me live because if I’ve been given this chance at life I want to live it to the fullest … I want to be able to hold my mommy’s hand.”

-

A small crowd of pro-choice protesters made themselves heard, handing out condoms, and shouting slogans. Here’s what they had to say.

-

Who: Julie Lalonde, Ottawa

History: Spokesperson for Abortion Rights Coalition and a member of pro-choice group “Radical Handmaid.” Was wearing a red robe, complete with a nun-like white hat.

Quote: “We’re here today in our outrageous garb to show, yes, we are outrageous but so is the thought of talking about abortion, and taking away the right to abortion, in 2013.”

-

Who: Amal Chelhi, Ottawa

History: Came from Richmond Hill, Ont., and is a student at Carleton University. Agreed issue of female gendercide needs to be addressed, but said it is separate from abortion.

Quote: “I think it’s crazy that there’s a bunch of little children and old white men here … little children don’t know enough and old white men, it’s not anything to do with them.”
